IKE vs IKZE: the difference
Poland has two personal retirement accounts. Both are opened with a bank, brokerage or fund company, and both save you tax, but in opposite places. IKE gives you tax-free growth. IKZE gives you a tax refund now and taxes the payout at a low flat rate.
| IKE | IKZE | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Individual Retirement Account | Individual Retirement Security Account |
| 2026 limit | PLN 28,260 a year | PLN 11,304 a year, or PLN 16,956 if you run a business |
| Tax when you pay in | None. You pay from taxed income, with no deduction. | You deduct contributions from taxable income and get a refund. |
| Tax on growth | None inside the account | None inside the account |
| Tax when you withdraw | None after age 60, if you paid in during at least 5 calendar years | 10% flat tax on the payout after age 65, if you paid in for at least 5 years |
| If you withdraw early | 19% tax on the gains (the "Belka tax") | The withdrawn amount is taxed as ordinary income, so you lose the earlier refund |

Which is better, IKE or IKZE?
- 32% tax payer: IKZE is usually the stronger choice. A 32% refund today against a 10% tax at payout is hard to beat.
- 12% tax payer: the refund is smaller, so the gap narrows. IKE can be as good, and it is far more flexible.
- Flat tax at 19%: IKZE still gives a solid 19% deduction, and the 10% payout tax leaves a clear gain.
- Lump-sum taxpayer or no deduction: IKZE gives no refund, so IKE is generally the better wrapper.
- Using both: a common approach is to fill IKZE first for the refund, then use IKE, and put the IKZE refund into IKE each year. The calculator above compares this with the other options.
IKE and IKZE for foreigners and expats
- PESEL: you need a Polish PESEL number to open either account. Some providers also ask for a Polish bank account.
- Tax residency: the IKZE refund requires you to file a Polish annual tax return and to be taxed in Poland. Use the residency check if you are unsure.
- Leaving Poland: you can usually keep the accounts, but the IKZE deduction needs Polish taxable income, so contributions normally stop being useful. What you take out later may also be taxed in your new country, so check the tax treaty.
- Choose a provider that accepts foreigners: brokers and banks differ in the documents they accept and in whether they support English.
- Your own money: unlike your ZUS pension, IKE and IKZE balances are yours, and you can name a beneficiary.
How this calculator works
- Every option costs you the same cash each year. The IKZE refund is invested on top, in a regular taxable account or in IKE, as labelled.
- Money above the IKE or IKZE limit is modelled in a regular taxable account, taxed at 19% on gains at the end.
- Returns compound monthly at the annual rate you choose, after fund fees. IKE is taxed at nothing and IKZE at 10% on the whole payout.
- It assumes you withdraw at the age you enter and that you meet the 5-year rules. It does not model the PPK employee scheme, dividend taxes on foreign funds or currency effects.
Frequently asked questions
What is the IKE limit for 2026?
The IKE limit for 2026 is PLN 28,260, which is three times the forecast average monthly wage of PLN 9,420.
What is the IKZE limit for 2026?
The basic IKZE limit for 2026 is PLN 11,304. People running a business can contribute up to PLN 16,956.
How much tax do I save with IKZE?
Your refund equals the contribution times your top tax rate. At the maximum PLN 11,304 it is about PLN 1,356 at 12%, PLN 2,148 at 19% and PLN 3,617 at 32%. Lump-sum taxpayers get no deduction.
IKE or IKZE: which is better?
IKZE usually wins when you pay 32% or the 19% flat tax, because the refund is large and the payout tax is only 10%. IKE is better if you cannot use a deduction, or if you want tax-free withdrawals and more flexibility.
Can foreigners open IKE or IKZE in Poland?
Yes, if you have a PESEL number. For the IKZE tax refund you also need to be taxed in Poland and file a Polish annual return. Provider rules on documents and language vary.
Can I have both IKE and IKZE?
Yes. You can hold both at the same time and use both limits in the same year.
Can I withdraw money from IKE or IKZE early?
Yes, but you lose the benefit. An early IKE withdrawal pays 19% tax on the gains. An early IKZE withdrawal is taxed as ordinary income, which wipes out the earlier refund. Full benefits need age 60 for IKE and age 65 for IKZE, plus at least 5 years of contributions.
Is the IKZE tax refund automatic?
No. You claim it by deducting the contributions in your annual PIT return. Your provider reports the amount you paid in. Lump-sum taxpayers cannot deduct IKZE contributions.
What happens to IKE and IKZE if I leave Poland?
You can usually keep the accounts open, but the IKZE deduction needs Polish taxable income. Tax on withdrawals may also arise in your new country, so check the tax treaty between Poland and that country.
Do IKE and IKZE replace the ZUS pension?
No. They are extra, voluntary savings on top of the compulsory ZUS pension. Unlike ZUS money, the balance is yours and can be withdrawn, with tax consequences if you do it early.
